Re: Week 2 thoughts??
1. Really surprised by the Merrillville game. What was the story line there? Loyola come out flat? Merrillville look great?
2. Same with the Valpo game. I was expecting that one to be the closer of the two against the Chicago Catholic League. Trying to give Valpo the benfit of the doubt as Brother Rice is possibly a Top 10 Illinois team. But, imo, getting beat that badly and looking so average against Penn indicates Valpo continues to not scale up since beating Whiteland. I'm sure a lack of talent is the major component. That State Title winning team had some dudes on the Lines and at RB.
3. Lake Central, jeez. You're a 6A school in a Chicago suburb. Act like it. You certainly do in baseball.
4. Did Portage's JV score on Hobart? I haven't watched that one yet. The Bricks did exactly what a 4A North contender should do.
5. Lafayette Jeff scored early and often on City. Feels like the score indicates the game was closer than it really was.
6. Crown Point has a serious problem on Offense.
7. It does appear New Prairie is taking a major step back. The LaPorte W was not special. Contgrats to Lowell on getting W #1 in the McKim era. Hopefully he can't get RDP back to being a legit contender in the 4A North. Interesting matchup at Griffith this week.
8. The Cheese looks like they're back to their .500 ways.
9. Nice bounce back W for Andrean by shutting out Bishop Luers.
10. Can't really knock Hanover for getting clobbered by Chatard. Feels like Highland might be capable of knocking Hanover Central down from their perch a top the Northwest Crossroads. Could be the 1st of likely many conference losses this year.
11. What's the story on Wheeler this year? 2-0 with a clobbering of KV
12. How about the Fighting Eagles? 2-0 with blowouts over 2 teams that beat them last year.

To answer your question.
1. Loyola came in with the youngest team in along time believe they had 15-18 sophomore starting. But they are all solid. But Merrillville should have won the game had ample opportunity to grab a big lead and just didn’t. Merrillville is a lot better than years past and aren’t even healthy right now. The changed OC/DC positions this year to shake some things up. The OC used to be Josh wissing which is now at Chesterton as a line coach I believe. The new OC is Sabinas which was the pirates DC last 5 years or so. Anthony curry moved from LBs coach to take thr DC position and he has the defense running a more aggressive formation and play calling system. Merrillville is young on the Oline. Returned alotnof defense from last year. But that QB for Merrillville might be the top in duneland this year. Adding that type of mobility to a pirate offense that was already good with 2 top tier RBs and a good WR group. Look out..
2. I think Valpo is gonna have a really down year, but you can’t count out Marshall.
3. I’m not sure LC is invested in football. Like the other sports anymore

Interesting. Thanks! I'm really intrigued by Merrillville this year. Wish they freaking stream their games. Driving up to The Region on a Friday night just isn't in the cards for me right now.DACfanatic wrote: ↑Thu Sep 04, 2025 1:15 amBoilernation wrote: ↑Wed Sep 03, 2025 11:19 pm1. Re: Week 2 thoughts??
Merrillville defense is legit. Wore down a bit in the second half but probably because the offense couldn't sustain a drive. Offense is a work in progress imo. Need to identify a threat in the passing game other than the TE #0 or the RB Jordan out of the backfield. Loyola completely shut down the Pirate rushing attack and that allowed them to pin their ears back getting to Hill, who was running for his life most of the night and took an absolute beating. Pirate o-line definitely a weak point.Boilernation wrote: ↑Thu Sep 04, 2025 4:47 pmInteresting. Thanks! I'm really intrigued by Merrillville this year. Wish they freaking stream their games. Merrillville best WR didn’t play the Loyola game matter of fact I think he sat week 1 and 2. But don’t quote me on week 1 (Bogard) and I been saying the O-line needs work. But offense as a whole I think is better this years past. We will see.
Re: Week 2 thoughts??
The ol will be the issue for merrillville. if they don't get it together the qb will get roughed up. but after crown point might not have problems in the area.DACfanatic wrote: ↑Fri Sep 05, 2025 4:57 amscarab527 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 04, 2025 5:02 pmMerrillville defense is legit. Re: Week 2 thoughts??
Most people get enamored with the skill positions but to be a really good team, you have to good up front on both sides of the ball especially on offense. If you’re not good up front, you are generally not a good offensive team.
I think CP has a better oline than Merrillville and would be the only reason I think CP has a chance to win. Merrillville oline is not very good but have tremendous talent at the skill positions.
I want Merrillville to win but if it’s low scoring I could CP pulling it out.

Both teams should roll easily after this week to semistate

QB : heavy lean Merrillville
RB: heavy lean Merrillville
WR: heavy lean Merrillville
TE: lean crown point
Ol: lean crown point
DL: slight lean crown point
LBs: medium lean crown point (gibbs effect)
DB: Merrillville
S: heavy lean Merrillville
P/K: lean crown point
Returners: Merrillville
Coaching: lean crown point.
6-6 split.
Crown point will have to solve the methodical blitz look Merrillville gives this year. It’s hard to tell where it’s coming from.
Gibbs I think will be big in pass game.
But I also thing crown point won’t contain Merrillville QB as they struggled with containing pikes behind a line that was worth that Merrillville
This game will be won by 14+ by either team. 1st qtr wil tell a lot
